Reed Canary Grass

Reed canary grass is a rhizomatous perennial grass. It has been used for erosion control and a grass forage crop in agriculture, however, it also poses a significant threat to the New York's wetlands.

Like most invasive plants, reed canary grass is capable of dominating areas where it becomes established, crowding out native vegetation and altering the area's diversity for both plant and animal life. The dense growth characteristic this plant causes a number of problems. As stands thicken they can impede the flow in watercourses, leading to siltation and eventual loss of habitat for native species of plants and animals.

Once reed canary grass is established, control or eradication is very difficult. Therefore early detection and removal is very important.
