Manure management is a critical component in improving water quality. Mismanagement of manure can cause excessive nutrients and pathogens impacting surface and groundwater. NRCS has a number of practices that with proper planning, design, implementation, and Operation & Management can reduce and/or eliminate the potential for pollution. Properly recycled manure can provide the nutrients and organic matter that improve the soil and provide for plant growth.

This training video describes the basic features of how to use the Animal Waste Management software, authored by John Classen, North Carolina State University.

This software has been used by consultants and government Technical Service Providers (TSP) for a number of years in designing storage and treatment facilities for animal production operations.Web image: Cornell University Cooperative Extension logo

The purpose of this Web site is to disseminate cutting edge information on manure treatment and management technologies. You'll find and abundance of information and links to Web sites covering topics such as CAFOs (Confined Animal Feed Operations), renewable energy derived from animal wastes, the hazards of manure handling systems, fact sheets, papers and reports.

  • Cropware: A Tool for Nutrient Management Planning
(Cornell University Department of Crop and Soils Sciences)
The Cornell University Nutrient Management Planning System (cuNMPS) is comprised of two software tools to help farmers and their advisors develop environmentally-sound, whole-farm nutrient management plans. These tools are the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) for herd diet nutrient management and Cornell Cropware for soil, manure, fertilizer, and crop nutrient management.

  • Manure Master Decision Support System (USDA NRCS)
This simple screening tool can help assess the relative potential for the nutrients contained in the animal manure on your farm to meet the crop uptake and utilization requirements for those crops that receive applications of manure.
