Selecting Objects Using Modifiers

Many AutoCAD commands will prompt you to select objects. This is referred to as creating a selection set. There are a number of modifiers that can be used to govern how objects are selected.

The following modifiers are typed at the command line after you are prompted to “Select Objects.”

Modifier Full name Description
W Window

Objects must lie completely within the window boundary to be selected.
The window will be displayed as a solid line.

C Crossing

Objects completely within the window or crossed by the boundary are selected.
The window will be displayed as a dashed line.

P Previous

Selects all objects from the previous selection set.

L Last Selects the last object drawn.
F Fence

Selects all objects crossed by a line.

WP Window polygon

The same action as W, but the window can be a polygon shape rather than a rectangle.

CP Crossing polygon

The same action as C, but the window can be a polygon shape rather than a rectangle.

All All

Selects all objects in model space, or the active paper space layout.

A Add

The Add Objects mode is turned on. Select objects individually or use one of the modifiers.

R Remove The Remove Objects mode is turned on. Select objects individually or use one of the modifiers. Once you’ve selected the objects to be removed from the selection set, use the A modifier to return to the Add Objects mode. Another method to remove objects from the selection set is to hold down the Shift key while selecting the objects.
