Create a Block with Multiple Insertion Points

Normally, when you create a block or wblock you assign one insertion point. Have you ever wished you could assign more than one? This procedure explains how you can add more insertion points using the Dynamic Block Editor (BEDIT).

Create an additional insertion point

  1. Create a new block with one insertion point or use an existing block.

  2. Invoke the BEDIT command at the command line or double click an existing block if it is currently on the drawing screen.

  3. In the Edit Block Definition dialog box, select the block to be edited from the list of blocks in the drawing. The block will already be selected if you double clicked on it.

  4. Click OK. The Block Authoring Palette and the Block Editor toolbar appear on the screen. The next step is to create one or more custom grips. These grips will act as insertion points.

  5. Select the Point Parameter command from the Parameters tab of the Block Authoring Palette.

  6. Select a point on the block to define as an additional insertion point. Snaps can be used if needed.

  7. Drag and drop the resulting Position text and leader away from the selected point. Where they are dropped has no bearing on this procedure. The text and leader will not be visible when the block is inserted into the drawing.

  8. When you create an insertion point it will have an exclamation mark near it. This indicates an action has not been assigned to it. In this case no actions need to be assigned. The exclamation mark can be ignored.

  9. Create as many additional insertion points as needed. The single insertion point that was defined when the block was created will be the first point available when the block is inserted into the drawing. The additional insertion points will be presented in the order they were created.

  10. Using a selection window, highlight only the additional insertion points.

    • Do not click on an insertion point to highlight it. This may create unexpected results in the next step.

    • Do not highlight the Position text or leader.

    • If multiple points were created, they may be highlighted individually or as a group.

  11. View the Properties of the points. In the Miscellaneous (Misc) area of the Properties display, make sure the Cycling function is set to Yes.

  12. Save the edited block definition. The Save button is the second from the left on the Block Editor toolbar.

  13. Close the Block Editor.

Insert the block

As the block is inserted into the drawing, press and release the CTRL key to cycle through the insertion points. When the desired insertion point is reached, place the block in your drawing.
