New England/New York Forestry Initiative

Cut-off Date for Fiscal Year 2012 Funding is March 23, 2012!

The New England/New York region contains over 52 million acres of forest lands, including the largest intact block of temperate, broadleaf forest in the nation. Eighty percent privately owned, the New England/New York Forest stretches from the Atlantic coast to the highest mountain peaks in the region, providing not only habitat for a wide variety of wildlife but also forest products, recreational activities and tourism.

NRCS is working with private forest landowners and land managers to help them maintain and enhance the many benefits they provide. Through the New England/New York Forestry Initiative, NRCS is committed to improving forest stewardship and wildlife habitat, and conserving the value of the region’s forest landscape for future generations. The Initiative provides a combination of technical and financial assistance to private landowners and land managers. New York is one of seven states participating in this special initiative- which also includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Typical practices in New York include: forest stand improvement, brush management and erosion control on forest trails and landings. These conservation practices help to promote healthy, sustainable forests.

Financial assistance for the New England/New York Forestry Initiative is available through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, with the cut-off date for fiscal year 2012 funding being March 23, 2012. Specific practices, payment schedules, and project selection criteria can differ by state.
