Featured Earth Team Volunteer
Michael Humphrey

Earth Team volunteer makes a significant impact during his five
months with NRCS
Michael Humphrey sought
out NRCS volunteer opportunities upon learning about the work that the agency
does within the areas of Resource Conservation. Michael was raised in rural
Fulton County, New York and his first hands-on farming experience was while
working a few summers on his cousin's vegetable farm in Montgomery County.
He began his volunteer
work in January 2008 at the Plattsburgh, New York office. Michael brought a background
in Geology and Geographic Information Systems to the Earth Team volunteer
program. He recently graduated from Plattsburgh State University, Environmental
Geology B.A., GIS and Hydrogeology Minors, and received the award for
“Outstanding Geology Graduate” from the Center for Earth and Environmental
Science. He had the great benefit of experiencing some of the varied
conservation programs that are currently being implemented in Clinton County.
Michael
has spent many hours this spring along the Great Chazy River with multiple
Riparian Forest Buffer projects totaling 2 and 1/4 miles of streambank, fish
habitat, and crop fields being protected. He found the Earth Team volunteer
program to be a very enriching experience, “This is an excellent opportunity for
anyone pursuing a degree in the Natural Resources field. I would encourage
everyone to explore the opportunity to join the Earth Team.”
Michael wrapped up his
volunteer service at the end of May and is now headed to New Hampshire for an
Internship with the New Hampshire Geological Survey. He said that he will apply
the knowledge that he has gained here in his future endeavors and is considering
the possibility of eventually returning to the NRCS as a Soil Conservation
Technician.
