Bringing conservation from the
countryside to your backyard
Whether
you have rural acreage, a suburban yard, or a city lot, you can help protect the
environment and add beauty and interest to your surroundings.
Visit the NRCS
Backyard
Conservation Web page where you can download our 28-page publication,
Backyard Conservation. It shows you how you can adapt conservation practices
that have been used by farmers and ranchers successfully for decades.
You can also view or download the
Tip Sheets contained in the booklet.
Better Wetlands
More than a dozen ideas to
improve restored wetlands for wildlife and personal enjoyment
Better Wetlands
NRCS Kansas and NRCS Idaho have teamed up to
publish a booklet and accompanying Web page named "Better Wetlands". Through their generosity, NRCS New
York has created it's own Web version based on the material found in the
original publication.
Buffers: Common Sense Conservation
Read about the successes of people installing buffers and other conservation practices on their land.
For more information about Conservation Buffers, please visit
Conservation Buffers: Design Guidelines for Buffers, Corridors, and Greenways.
This Web site provides a publication
for landusers which describes ways that a vegetative buffer can be applied to protect soil, improve air and water quality, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, produce economic products, provide recreation opportunities, or beautify the landscape.

Dig It! The Secrets of Soil
Without soil, life on land
would not exist as we know it. The soils under our feet are a vast
reservoir for life and play a part in almost every aspect of human
existence – food, housing, clothing, medicine, ecosystems and much
more. This vital living system is the focus of this dynamic new 5,000
square-foot Exhibition scheduled to open at the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of Natural History on July 19, 2008.
Visit the Smithsonian’s
National Museum of Natural History Web site devoted to their new
exhibition - Dig It! The Secrets
of Soil.
